Bear Mountain Botanicals is a micro-business located in Danville, Maine dedicated to creating high quality products that are effective, pleasant to use, and safe for kids, animals, and the environment.
Local ingredients, and packaging are used in production as often as availability allows. Those items that are not available in Maine are purchased from suppliers as close to home and New England as possible.
Giving back to the community is an important part of the business. Teaching others about the natural world, and the importance of good stewardship is where it starts. Donations of products and time are made frequently to non-profit organizations that support the health of Maine communities, and promote environmental preservation.
How it All Began...
Owner, D'Arcy Ames began making candles in 1996 when living in downtown Portland. Her first designs were a line of aromatherapy candles made with high quality ingredients, including essential oils. Many Portland retailers carried her products, which lead to them being shipped all over the country. The popularity of the natural fragrances encouraged D'Arcy to persue the purest essential oils from around the world, and a career in perfumery.
In 2002, D'Arcy moved to the wilds of Oxford County! Spending time outdoors with her young son Calvin, she discovered how difficult enjoying the outdoors can be with black flies swarming about. (And, toddlers are easy targets!) Not wanting to be driven indoors on sunny spring days- chemical containg insect repellents not an option - D'Arcy embarked on several days of experimenting with blends to be applied to the skin- sensitive skin!
Fresh, local spring water is used in repellents.
Pesticide Free Herbs grown in Maine are used in products containing raw plant matter like-sachets, and soaps.
Products are packaged in Reusable and Recyclable containers.
All ingredients are Biodegradable!

It was a fragrance D'Arcy had created when in Portland that seemed to do the trick! After several seasons of working to get the base right- not too greasy, not too strong- friends and family kept asking for more. This lead to D'Arcy getting the local convenient store to sell her product. Customers wanted more!
Bye, Bye Black FlyTM was born, and the rest is history!
